Machine Shop Manager

Part time: Thursdays and Sundays 9:45 AM to 5:15 PM
$16.00 to $18.50 per hour

The Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation is looking for an individual to oversee and manage its museum antique machine shop and to maintain the general museum collections. Under the direction of the Executive Director, this position’s responcibilties include managing and maintaining three small machine shops dating from 1872, (training will be provided).  Using preservation standards he/she will supervise a team of dedicated volunteers in repairing museum artifacts and exhibits and will record all work done to the collection. He /she will work with volunteers, interns and museum staff on special projects related to the museum collections and serve as a tour guide and interpreter for the museum.  He/She will assist with the instillation of exhibits and special programs, events and other projects as directed by the executive director. Serving as a shift supervisor, he/she will be responsible for opening and closing the museum, overseeing the front desk staff and ensuring the safety of museum visitors and exhibits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have experience working with both metal working machinery and with woodworking tools.  He/she will have an understanding of modern trends in personal fabrication equipment such as 3D digital printing, metalworking, electronic hacking, etc.  He/She will have an interest in antique machinery and the history of the industrial revolution, Massachusetts technology and new advancements in industry today.  The shop manager will have the ability to work cooperatively with all ages of volunteers, interns and the general public.  He/She must be able to gently lead a team of knowledgeable volunteers as well as except guidance from them when needed.  He/She must have a strong work ethic and be a team player. Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills are a must.

Special consideration will be given to individuals with a demonstrated interest in old technology.
